AIDS-awareness bike tour is coming to Cleveland
by Doreen Cudnik
With a sendoff by the mayor of Buffalo and New York State Rep. Sam Hoyt, biker Jim Petretta will embark on a historic journey on May 31, a 5,000 mile cross-country bicycle tour to support AIDS awareness. The nonprofit project, U.S. AIDS 5000, was founded by Petretta to raise national awareness about the disease. Petretta, who has AIDS, plans to stop in 50 cities during the three month journey to talk about it. In Chicago he will appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Petretta expects to pedal through Cleveland on June 18 and 19. A luncheon, with Petretta as the guest of honor, will be hosted by the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland on Monday, June 19. Anyone interested in meeting or cycling with Jim should call the director of development at the Taskforce, at 216-621-0766.
If you live in or around Dayton and like to play tennis, you're in luck. Dayton athletes who participated in the 1994 Gay Games in New York City are planning a gay and lesbian tennis league this summer for players in the Dayton area. Depending on the number of interested players, the plan is to start with a
Doris and Deborah Hoffmann
If you missed it at the Cleveland International Film Festival, you now have another chance to see the Academy Award nominated documentary Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter by lesbian filmmaker Deborah Hoffman.
In the tender and touching film, Hoffman chronicles her exasperation with and then her understanding of her mother Doris' struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Often funny, Hoffman re-tells some of her mother's more bizarre episodes, labeling them "periods," such as "the banana period," where Doris eats banana after banana, unable to remember she had just eaten one, and "the dentist period," where Doris obsesses about a tooth that had already been fixed and shows up every day for an appointment she doesn't have. The film is a must-see for anyone who has ever been a caretaker, particularly of an elderly parent or grandparent.
Deborah's partner, Frances Reid, is the cinematographer for the film. She was also nominated for an Academy Award this year for her work with Dee Mosbacher on the documentary Straight From The Heart. P.O.V. is bringing Complaints to PBS. The film can be seen on WVIZ in Cleveland on June 8 at 10:00 pm. WOSU in Columbus has no plans to air the film; call their program ming department at 614-292-9678 to let them know you want to see it. WCET in Cincinnati has the film slated for sometime in July; call 513-381-4033 to find out the airtime.
round-robin tournament in June with games once or twice each week, to be followed by a tennis ladder or pyramid for the rest of the summer. A one-day singles or doubles tournament may end the season. If you are interested in playing, cantact Chuck at 513277-5125.
